High Load Capacity and Strength: The spiral tooth form of zerol bevel gears in gearboxes creates a longer line of contact and a larger contact area, allowing the load to be distributed evenly. Consequently, their load-bearing capacity is approximately 20%–30% higher than that of straight bevel gears of comparable size, enabling them to withstand significant impact torque.
High Efficiency: Precision-machined spiral bevel gears typically achieve transmission efficiencies of 96%–98%, ensuring minimal energy loss.
Generation of Axial Thrust: The presence of the spiral angle generates substantial axial thrust during transmission. Therefore, in engineering designs, corresponding thrust bearings (such as angular contact ball bearings) must be incorporated to accommodate these forces.

Function of Spiral Bevel Gears in Gearboxes

 

This is the most fundamental and core function of a spiral bevel gear.​ Within a gearbox—particularly in right-angle drives and reducers—it enables the input and output shafts to intersect at a right angle (typically 90°), facilitating efficient power transmission while changing the direction of rotation.

Although a spiral bevel gear does not inherently “alter the gear ratio,” it serves as a critical direction-changing and power-transmitting component within the gearbox. It is often paired with other gear types—such as spur gears or planetary gears—to form multi-stage transmission systems, achieving:

Reduced speed → Increased output torque

Or conversely: Increased speed → Reduced output torque

Compared to straight bevel gears, the progressive meshing of spiral bevel gears (involving simultaneous contact across multiple teeth) delivers:
