Herringbone gears, a specially designed type of double helical gear with their shaped like a “V” or a herringbone pattern, can be considered as two helical gears with opposite helix directions (one left-handed and one right-handed) combined side-by-side on the same gear body, usually with a undercut in the middle. It combines all the advantages of helical gears while completely canceling out axial thrust through its symmetrical helical structure. The biggest advantage of herringbone gear is without axial thrust, the axial forces generated by the two opposing spirals cancel each other out, eliminating the need for thrust bearings to withstand axial loads and simplifying the bearing configuration which allows them to bear heavy load.
