Zerol Bevel Gear

A Zero bevel gear, also known as a Zerol bevel gear, is a special type of bevel gear that is a registered trademark of the Gleason Corporation. Its core definition can be summed up in one sentence:

The tooth trace on the tooth flank is curved (like a spiral bevel gear), but the spiral angle at the mid-point of the face width is 0°.

Therefore, it is not​ a straight bevel gear (straight teeth have no curvature), nor is it a true spiral bevel gear (which typically has a spiral angle of about 35°). It represents a compromise between the two.

The Role Of Zerol Bevel Gear In Agricultural Machinery

 

In agricultural machinery, the Zerol zero-helix-angle bevel gear plays the role of “the most cost-effective 90° intersecting-axis transmission solution”​ — more durable and quieter than straight bevel gears, yet without the thrust bearings and complex housings required by true spiral bevel gears. It perfectly fits agriculture’s demand profile of “rough work done with finesse, affordable and tough.”

The power from the steering wheel/steering column needs to be transmitted through a 90° turn​ to the tie rod or hydraulic control valve. The steering mechanism operates with frequent direction changes​ and requires no additional axial play​ (otherwise steering accuracy and feel would suffer).

With Zerol’s β=0° → axial force ≈ 0, the meshing force does not become a thrust that pushes the shaft axially → ordinary deep-groove ball bearings are sufficient; there is no need for angular contact thrust bearings.

The curved tooth line provides progressive engagement → compared to straight bevel gears, it eliminates the “clicking” impact noise, giving the steering wheel a smoother feel.
