Application of Zero Bevel Gear in Wheel Loaders

 

1. Differential Internal Planetary / Side Gears (Indirectly Related)

Strictly speaking, the internal planetary gears and side gears in a differential are straight bevel gears or Zerol-type bevel gears. Some older or light-duty loaders opt to replace straight bevel gears with Zerol Bevel Gears in the differential. The advantage is maintaining zero axial thrust while reducing differential operating noise.

2. Work Pump PTO Right-Angle Gearbox

Loaders often draw power from the transmission or engine to drive the work hydraulic pump, fan cooler, or air compressor. In such small right-angle PTO gearboxes (90° transmission), when the following requirements apply:

  • Bidirectional reversible rotation (can transmit power in both forward and reverse)
  • Minimized axial thrust → simplified bearing housing design
  • Quieter and smoother operation than straight bevel gears

A Zero Bevel Gear (Zerol) pair is adopted as an economical alternative to Spiral Bevel Gears.

3. Steering System Auxiliary Angle Drive / Centralized Lubrication System Drive

In some older loaders, the steering assist pump drive or centralized lubrication system’s angle drive mechanism uses Zerol Bevel Gears under moderate speed and moderate load conditions. This allows direct replacement of existing straight bevel gear housings without modifying the bearings.

4. Small/Mini Loader Drive Axle Final Drive (Rare)

In very few mini skid-steer loaders or low-horsepower models (<30 HP), the drive axle final drive may use Zerol Bevel Gears as an upgrade over straight bevel gears. However, large-tonnage loaders
