Zero Bevel Gears For Heavy-Duty Scraper Conveyor

Zero spiral bevel gears (Zero Bevel Gears, more accurately called Zero Spiral Bevel Gears) are a particular type of bevel gear.

Their core definition is: a bevel gear with a curved tooth line (like a spiral bevel gear) but a spiral angle of 0 degrees (like a straight bevel gear). You can think of it as a “hybrid” or a “compromise solution” between straight and spiral bevel gears.

Its two key features are:

  1. Smooth and quiet transmission: Thanks to the curved tooth profile, its meshing is progressive, with multiple teeth engaged at once. This results in smoother and quieter operation compared to straight bevel gears.
  2. No axial thrust generation: Due to the 0-degree spiral angle, it does not produce the separating axial force during operation that standard spiral bevel gears do. This significantly simplifies bearing and housing design, reducing structural complexity and cost.

Heavy-Duty Scraper Conveyor & Its Zero Spiral Bevel Gear Drive System

 

This is a heavy-duty scraper conveyor, also commonly referred to as a “coal plough” or “armoured face conveyor” in mining and heavy industry. It serves as the core equipment for the continuous transportation of bulk materials (such as coal, ore, sand, and gravel).

This type of equipment primarily serves fully mechanized coal mining faces in underground mines or coal preparation plants. It is typically positioned beneath the shearer, responsible for transporting the coal continuously cut and discharged from the shearer in real-time to the stageloader or belt conveyor in the entry.

Scraper conveyors operate under typical harsh conditions characterized by low speed, heavy loads, and high impact. In such scenarios, the reliability of the drive system is paramount. As previously discussed, using a transmission system built with zero spiral bevel gears​ can effectively prevent the significant axial thrust generated by standard spiral bevel gears. This substantially extends bearing service life and reduces failure rates in the high-dust environment of underground mines, making it a highly ideal drive solution for this type of heavy-duty conveying equipment.
