Zero spiral bevel gears (Zero Bevel Gears, more accurately called Zero Spiral Bevel Gears) are a particular type of bevel gear.
Their core definition is: a bevel gear with a curved tooth line (like a spiral bevel gear) but a spiral angle of 0 degrees (like a straight bevel gear). You can think of it as a “hybrid” or a “compromise solution” between straight and spiral bevel gears.
Its two key features are:
- Smooth and quiet transmission: Thanks to the curved tooth profile, its meshing is progressive, with multiple teeth engaged at once. This results in smoother and quieter operation compared to straight bevel gears.
- No axial thrust generation: Due to the 0-degree spiral angle, it does not produce the separating axial force during operation that standard spiral bevel gears do. This significantly simplifies bearing and housing design, reducing structural complexity and cost.
