Its defining features include the complex geometry of the worm shaft (incorporating precision bearing seats and locking interfaces) and the multi-bolt flange connection employed on the worm gear.

This large-module, heavy-duty worm gear set with a flanged worm wheel serves the critical dual purpose of “low-speed, high-torque output plus mechanical self-locking to prevent load drop”​ in large-scale hoisting machinery. It represents a classic final-stage reduction and safety backup unit within the lifting mechanism.

The motors used in large hoists – such as port cranes, mine winders, marine winches, and high-capacity construction hoists – are typically variable frequency asynchronous motors or DC motors, operating at speeds of 600 to 1,500 RPM. These systems usually employ a preliminary reduction stage via spur gears or planetary gears before engaging the worm gear set for the final, high-ratio deceleration.

Mapping the components in the image to their function in a hoist:

Worm: Connects to the intermediate shaft or the input shaft from the pre-stage reducer. The stepped shaft design, integrated bearing seats, and locknut assembly are standard features of a high-speed gearbox input shaft.

Worm Wheel: Rigidly mounted to the drum shaft end or the drum web via a multi-bolt flange connection utilizing the ring of bolt holes. Since the worm wheel rotates once per revolution of the drum, the wire rope is wound or unwound precisely according to the drum’s circumference.

Reduction Ratio: In large hoists, the worm gear set typically employs a ratio (i) of 20:1 to 60:1. Combined with the pre-stage gearing, the total system ratio reaches 100:1 to 300:1. This reduces the motor’s high speed down to the drum’s operational range of just a few to RPM while multiplying the torque dozens of times—providing the necessary force to lift loads ranging from tens to hundreds of tons.
