Worm Gear For Worm Gearbox

This worm gear set is specifically for worm gearbox. It uses high-strength materials, precisely controls heat treatment, and high precision accuracy levels to ensure reliable performance in power transmission applications.

The worm wheel is produced from CuSn12Ni2, known for superior resistance to wear and seizure under sliding contact conditions. The worm uses 20CrMnTi material, GB standard case-hardening steel, carburizing heat treatment reach hardness 58-62HRC, forms a hardened surface layer while preserving a tough, impact-resistant core. This material pairing improves the gear unit’s ability to withstand both continuous friction and intermittent shock loads.

In terms of manufacturing precision, the worm wheel is manufactured to DIN 8 accuracy, while the worm shaft meets DIN 6. The tighter tolerance on the worm shaft (DIN 6) minimizes transmission error and backlash, contributing to smoother motion control and quieter operation. The DIN 8 rating on the wheel represents a practical balance between production economy and reliable meshing behavior.

Worm Gear Used In Worm Gearboxes

 

At the heart of every worm gearbox lies the worm gear set. That small bronze component inside a worm gearbox does a job that ordinary gears simply cannot match. It takes high-speed input from the worm – the screw-like part – and transforms it into slow, powerful output. Simple geometry, but brilliant engineering.

Unlike spur or helical gears, a worm and worm gear set achieves massive reduction ratios in a single stage – from 5:1 all the way up to 100:1 or more. Try doing that with two normal gears, and you would need a housing the size of a suitcase. This compact design saves space, weight, and maintenance costs.

Another standout feature is self-locking: When properly designed, the worm gear cannot back-drive the worm. This inherent feature provides holding torque without external brakes – critical for hoists, conveyors, and lifts.

And it provides quiet & smooth operation: The sliding action between the worm and gear results in gradual tooth engagement, reducing vibration and noise compared to spur or bevel gears.
