That is a good question. The short answer is: we can do either. It is up to you.
Here is how it usually works. You send us a sample gear – maybe it is worn out, or it is a good one that you want us to copy. We inspect it, measure it, and study it carefully. We take notes, photos, and measurements. We may even make a drawing based on your sample.
Once we have all the information we need, we can send the sample back to you. We do not need to keep it for future orders because we keep a copy of the drawing and all the measurements in our system. If you order the same gear again five years later, we can make it from the records without needing the sample again.
If you prefer, you can leave the sample with us. Some customers find it easier to just leave it here. We will keep it in a labeled bag or box, stored in a safe place. If you ever need it back, just let us know and we will ship it to you.
We treat your sample as your property. We do not use it for anything else. We do not show it to other customers. We do not make copies for anyone else. It belongs to you.
One thing to keep in mind – if your sample is worn out or broken, we will measure it carefully and try to figure out what the original shape and size were. We will send you a drawing for approval before we make anything. That way you can check if the design looks right before we start cutting metal.
If you want the sample back, just include a note when you send it. If you do not say anything, we will assume it is okay for us to keep it until the order is finished. After that, we can return it or keep it for your future orders. Just let us know what you prefer.
