Can you make a gear stronger than the original one?

Yes, we can. This is another thing we do quite often. You have a machine that works fine, but one gear keeps breaking or wearing out too fast. You are tired of replacing it every year. You want something tougher. We can help with that.

The first thing we need to figure out is why the original gear is failing. Is it breaking – like teeth snapping off or the shaft twisting? Or is it wearing down – teeth getting thin, splines getting loose? Different problems need different solutions.

If the gear is breaking, that usually means it is not strong enough for the load. Maybe the original material was too soft. Maybe the heat treatment was not done right. Maybe the gear was just designed for lighter work than what you are using it for. To fix this, we can use a stronger steel – like moving from carbon steel to alloy steel. We can also change the heat treatment to make the gear tougher on the inside so it does not snap under shock loads. Sometimes we make the gear a little bigger if there is room, or change the tooth shape to spread the load better.

If the gear is wearing down, that means the surface is not hard enough. The teeth are rubbing against something and slowly grinding away. To fix this, we can use a harder surface. We can case harden the gear – that makes the outside very hard but leaves the inside tough. We can also use a different material, like a steel with more carbon or alloy elements that resist wear better. Sometimes we add a coating or a surface treatment that reduces friction.
