Whats the Advantage of Worm Gear for Screw Jack?

 

The core advantages of worm gear mechanisms in screw jacks lie in their exceptional self-locking capability and powerful mechanical advantage, making them an ideal, safe, and reliable choice for heavy-load lifting applications.

 

Self-locking

This is the biggest advantage of the worm gear structure. When the lead angle of the worm is smaller than the friction angle, the mechanism has “reverse self-locking” characteristics. This means that a heavy load can only be raised or lowered by driving the worm, cannot back-drive the worm, make it keep securely in any position. It can effectively prevents accidental drops caused by power interruptions or system failures, thereby greatly enhancing equipment safety.

Force multiplication and speed reduction

The worm acts as a high-speed driving gear, a single full rotation advances the worm gear by only one tooth. It can reach massive reduction ratio (typically ranging from 5:1 to 100:1), making the low torque from a motor into tens of tons of linear thrust, achieving the effect of moving a massive load with minimal effort.

Compact structure

For standard gears, if want to achieve high reduction ratios, it often requires multi-stage assemblies. However, a worm gear system just needs two shafts. This compact design offers significant advantages in applications where installation space is limited.

Multi-unit linkage for synchronized control

Worm gear jacks typically feature worm shafts that extend from both sides. This design allows multiple jacks to be interconnected via drive shafts and gearboxes, enabling unified control by a single motor. This capability is highly practical for large-scale equipment or platforms requiring synchronized four-point lifting.
