This gear set effectively addresses the limitation of spur gears regarding directional change, offering the following advanced features:
- Directional Change: Specifically designed to accurately redirect longitudinal power by 90 degrees, converting it into the lateral motion required to drive wheels or tracks.
- Smooth and Quiet Operation: Unlike spur or straight bevel gears which engage suddenly, spiral bevel gears utilize progressive contact. Multiple teeth share the load simultaneously during the mesh cycle, resulting in exceptionally smooth operation with significantly lower noise and vibration compared to straight-tooth designs.
- High Load Capacity: Due to the longer line of contact and simultaneous multi-tooth engagement, spiral bevel gears offer approximately 20%-30% higher load capacity than straight bevel gears of comparable size, making them ideal for heavy-duty applications.
- Generation of Axial Thrust: The presence of the spiral angle generates substantial axial thrust during transmission. Consequently, the bearing system must be robustly designed, typically requiring tapered roller bearings or dedicated thrust bearings to handle these forces.
