Can you reverse engineer or duplicate a worn or broken gear?

Absolutely!

Reverse engineering is one of our core services. We can replicate existing gears even without the original drawings or CAD data. If you have worn, damaged, or obsolete gears from older equipment (e.g., discontinued machinery, old cars, industrial presses, or European imports with scarce spare parts), simply send us the physical gear. Our process begins with using 3D laser scanning or optical measurement to obtain precise tooth profiles, root fillet radii, helix angles, pressure angles, and overall dimensions. For smaller gears, we use a precision coordinate measuring machine (CMM) to create critical references. If the gear is damaged, we can infer the tooth profile of the complete gear from the remaining parts, combined with your installation and fit requirements. We then generate a complete 3D CAD model and 2D drawings for your review before production begins. Where feasible, we can also improve the original design—for example, upgrading lower-grade steel to alloy steel, adding heat treatment processes, or adjusting the tooth profile to reduce noise or increase load-bearing capacity. Reverse engineering can help you avoid costly machine replacements, prolonged downtime, or minimum order quantity restrictions imposed by OEMs. Prices depend on the complexity of the gear (number of teeth, helical configuration, internal splines) and the required dimensions.
