What information must I provide to get an accurate quote of custom gears?

To receive an accurate quote of custom gear, you must supply a complete 2D drawing, sometimes 3D CAD model.

Necessary data includes:

  1. gear parameters—number of teeth, module (or diametral pitch), pressure angle, helix angle (for helical gears), and tooth profile standard (e.g., AGMA, DIN, ISO).
  2. Dimensions—outside diameter, root diameter, pitch diameter, face width, bore size, and any keyways or set screw locations.
  3. Material specification (e.g., 4140 steel, 316 stainless, nylon 6/6) and hardness requirement (e.g., 50–55 HRC).
  4. Quality grade (e.g., AGMA Q10, DIN 6)
  5. Quantities—samples (1–10 pcs), low-volume (10–100), or mass production (100+).
  6. Any secondary operations like heat treatment, surface coating, or balancing. Without these details, the manufacturer cannot estimate machine time, tool wear, or scrap risk. If you lack a full drawing, some shops offer design assistance, but that adds time and cost.

Otherwise, send us samples, we could do reverse engineering. When got your samples, we could do all pre-measurements and give you formal quotation with details technical points, and our drawing reverse design is free service.
