A miter gear is a specific subset of bevel gears. Their core differences lie in gear pairing and function:
Gear Ratio and Pairing
- Miter Gear: Specifically refers to a pair of bevel gears with an identical number of teeth. Therefore, its gear ratio is fixed at 1:1. The size (pitch cone angle) of the two gears is usually also the same.
- Standard Bevel Gear: Refers to all bevel gears in general. The two paired gears can have either the same or a different number of teeth, so the gear ratio can be 1:1, or any other ratio (used to change both direction and speed).
Shaft Angle
- Miter Gear: Typically (almost by default) used for shafts intersecting at 90 degrees.
- Standard Bevel Gear: Can be used for shafts intersecting at any angle (most commonly 90 degrees, but other angles are possible).
Primary Function
- Miter Gear: Its function is purely to change the direction of power transmission without altering the rotational speed.
- Standard Bevel Gear: Its function is to change direction and can also simultaneously change speed and torque (when the gear ratio is not 1:1).
In simple terms: All miter gears are bevel gears, but not all bevel gears are miter gears. A miter gear is a specific bevel gear pairing with a 1:1 ratio, typically used for shafts intersecting at 90 degrees.
